Civil Rights

Federal and State of Michigan laws both provide relief for violations of civil rights.  Thus, your case can potentially be filed in either state or federal court.  To file in federal court, you must, as a prerequisite seek EEOC administrative relief.  This may or may not be advisable, however.  SBR can guide you to take the steps necessary to preserve your claims.  We have served as advocates in the EEOC administrative forum, in state courts, in federal courts and in both federal and state courts of appeal for clients in the civil rights arena.

Michigan law protects against civil rights violations in the areas of religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status.

Federal law (Title VII) offers protections to a slightly different set including discrimination in employment based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

Sample case experience includes discrimination against federal employees based on age and gender, religious discrimination in the academic context, and gender discrimination.
